Let's make a beef barley stew from 1897! Sharing :)
P.S. I used Chuck Roast instead of 'rump beef'.
Majestic Family Cookbook
Beef Broth with Barley 1897
Cut two pounds of rump beef into small squares,
the same of one onion, one carrot, one turnip,
one leek, one parsnip, and a celery stalk. Fry
these vegetables with butter in a saucepan, and
when slightly browned add the pieces of beef to
fry together with the vegetables; put in half a
cupful of washed barley, season with salt and
pepper, and add two quarts of water. Boil for
two hours. Serve with small squares of toasted
bread or else browned in the oven if desired.
