Time to hit things from really far away! Finally got this short scope properly mounted - which makes dialing the adjustments much simpler. Got zeroed at 100 yards, then walked the rifle to 200, 300, 400, 500, and finally 600 yards.
And then, of course, Chris had to come along and get a headshot without even trying. So next I'll have to hit at 1000 yards.
As far as prototype practical testing goes, I'd say this one passed.
The general rule for this sort of scope : Move the back of the scope in the direction you want the impact to move.
For example: Let's say your impact was below your center of aim. You'd like the impact point to move up. So, move the back of your scope up. This adjusts your point of view 'down', with the front mount acting as the fulcrum of the movement. Now to get your sight back on the target, you need to 'raise' the rifle, bringing your point of impact up.
That's a little convoluted, so I'm just going to remember to move the rear where I want the impact to go.
00:00 Getting Started
Finally got this scope nice and level.
Step one is boresighting. Definitely easier on this sort of rifle - just drop the block and look right down the barrel. Keep everything nice and steady, and dial that scope in so that it's looking at the same place.
Once you're sure the barrel and scope are pointed at the same spot, go ahead and start shooting at paper.
(As a side note - we had some issues identifying our bullet holes. A friend was secretly peppering our target with his .22 and cutting out holes that looked like ours. The hole you see on the 100 yard target view was one of his.)
01:45 213 (+12.5)
The pig at ~200 yards was cut in half by time. Luckily, he wasn't wily enough to evade a big, slow 45-70. The round had already dropped to subsonic by 150 yards, which makes the bullet trace much harder to see. The rounds are big and slow enough that sometimes they still stand out from the mirage.
03:29 305 (+24.0)
Another easy pig. And, I've already taken this rifle out to 300 with the 6X long malcolm scope. Still a comfortable range.
04:56 ~425 (+40.0)
Here's where the adjustments needed correcting. Our laser rangefinder wasn't pinging the targets, so we drew from memory, test shots, and wild guesses. Even more fun, it was an uphill shot - and I had run dope for level ground.
08:01 ~500 (+54.0)
This ram was lively, and the wind was livelier. Looks like it blew a little harder toward the right further up the hillside. At this point, the round's been in the air for 1.4 seconds and is traveling 921 fps. That's almost time for a sip of coffee before impact!
11:40 ~600 (+70.5)
1.7 seconds of flight time, and it's down to 880 fps. Possibly one of longest travel times I've ever had on a round. Looking at the impact, though, the round must stay remarkably stable.
