Today in our 2006 Chevrolet Colorado we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Curt trailer hitch receiver class 3, part number 13252. Here's what it looks like once it's installed. You can see it's going to fit up nice and flush against the bottom side of our bumper, this black powder-coated finish, the round tubular design. We have a flat-styled safety chain loop with a large diameter hole. It's going to accept most of your large safety hooks. It's got a single 5/8ths hitch pin. It's a 2 by 2 class 3 hitch.
Now this hitch is rated for 400 pounds of tongue weight, which is our downward force, and 4,000 pounds of gross trailer weight which is the amount of your loaded trailer. If you go up to our weight distribution we're going to raise this up to 600 pounds of tongue weight and 6,000 pounds of gross trailer weight. Now you want to consult your owner's manual or the manufacturer to make sure that your vehicle is able to tow that and always use the lesser of the 2 amounts. Our hitch is actually going to protrude about 3/4 of an inch past the end of our bumper. That shouldn't be an issue with anything you're going to use in there. From the ground for the inside of the top of the receiver tube it's going to be about 15 3/4".
Now to begin we're going to find our mounting points. We'll use this rear most bolt here on the frame, hooks the bumper on. I'm going to take that one out. We're going to have 2 blocks with carriage bolts that'll drop down through these 2 holes here. It'll be the same on the other side. To begin with we're going to go ahead and remove that bolt.
We're going to take a 13/16ths and remove this bolt. We're going to give these bolts back to the customer. We're going to be using new bolts that come with our hitch. Now we'll be doing the same thing on both sides. Whatever we do over here we'll do on the other side as well. Now you can see our bumper bracket here actually has a recess where the bolt goes.
Our kits going to come with a 1/2" spacer and a 1/4" spacer that we're going to install in between the hitch and the bumper bracket. I'm going to just take the new bolt it comes with and we'll start it in the hole. We'll take a little bit of electrical tape and we're just going to wrap it around. That'll keep our spacer blocks in place while we put our hitch up. Then we can just go ahead and cut the tape and pull it off when we're done. We just want to keep these blocks intact while we're doing our installation. Then we can go ahead and take our bolt out when we're ready to set our hitch up into place. On our bolts that go into the frame there into the bumper we're going to have a large fly washer and this new 3 bolt that's going to be a 1/2 inch bolt. It'll thread into the factory mount. Now with the help of a second set of hands we go ahead and place our hitch up into place through those blocks. I'm just going to start it up in here loosely. Now our 2 rear bolts here are going to be a 1/2 inch carriage bolt with a block and a flange nut that'll fit on the bottom side. We're going to need to fish those though the inside of our frame rail at the back here and come out through those 2 holes there that are already in the frame. Now we'll go ahead and snug down the bottom bolts first. You'll see our block has actually bent itself to match the other side so the bolts are even. Now we'll go ahead and tighten up both sides. Then we'll snug up the outside. These are 3/4 inch bolts. Our top ones here on the side now are going to be 7/8ths. Now we'll go ahead and torque our fasteners down to the specifications listed in our instructions. We'll start with the bottom ones and then we'll finish it up with the 2 side ones. That's going to do it for a look at and install of the Curt trailer hitch and receiver class 3, part number 13252 on our 2006 Chevrolet Colorado.
