Tasbih, also known as Misbaha or prayer beads, is a tool used by Muslims for counting the repetition of specific phrases or names of Allah during prayer or as a form of remembrance and supplication. It consists of a string of beads, usually with 99 or 33 beads, along with a central bead called the "guru" bead or marker.
The tasbih beads are typically made of various materials such as wood, gemstones, or plastic. The most common form of tasbih has 99 beads, which correspond to the 99 names of Allah (Asma-ul-Husna) mentioned in Islamic tradition. Some tasbih may have additional beads or other decorations.
Muslims hold the tasbih in their hand and move their fingers along the beads while reciting specific phrases or names of Allah. The recitation can vary depending on personal preference or cultural practices. Common phrases recited include the glorification of Allah (such as "SubhanAllah," meaning "Glory be to Allah"), seeking forgiveness (such as "Astaghfirullah," meaning "I seek forgiveness from Allah"), or expressing gratitude and praise (such as "Alhamdulillah," meaning "Praise be to Allah").
The use of tasbih serves multiple purposes. It allows Muslims to maintain focus and concentration during prayer or remembrance of Allah. It also helps in counting the repetitions, ensuring that the desired number of recitations is reached. Additionally, the rhythmic movement of the beads can have a calming and meditative effect, promoting a sense of tranquility and mindfulness.
Tasbih is not limited to formal prayer settings but can be used throughout the day as a way to remember and connect with Allah. It is a personal practice that allows Muslims to engage in constant remembrance and seek spiritual benefits through the repetition of Allah's names or phrases of devotion.
