The synthetic drug problem is escalating rapidly in West Africa. Between 2019 and 2023, 57% of global seizures of pharmaceutical opioids were in Africa.
One of the biggest challenges is identifying new and evolving synthetic substances. Without accurate forensic analysis, responding effectively becomes far more difficult.
Through its Synthetic Drug Strategy, UNODC is working with forensic laboratories in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo to improve drug and precursor identification and analysis, enabling more effective, efficient, and targeted responses to emerging threats.
