Heaviest rains in 41 years triggers devastation in India

At least 28 people have died after torrential rain caused flash floods and landslides across northern India.
Homes and vehicles were washed away and a bridge collapsed during the heaviest July rainfall for four decades.
In the worst affected state, Himachal Pradesh, which experienced more than 72 hours of incessant rain, 16 people were killed as infrastructure failed to cope with the level of water. Highways were so battered that great chunks broke off and vanished into the turbulent waters and the rest remained submerged.
Officials are closely watching the rising levels of the Yamuna river, already at the danger mark for overflowing its banks. About 37,000 people live in the low-lying areas near the river.
