Work on the digital tapestries you see in this room started a year ago. Community artist Allan Levy created the project with Houlton master developer Urban & Civic to mark the 100th anniversary of Rugby Radio and celebrate the new community growing and flourishing in and around that site in Houlton.
Over the last 12 months, Allan has worked with schools, businesses, groups, and individuals to encourage them to send in images under the theme ‘What Houlton Means to Me’. Allan also engaged with people from Houlton’s namesake Houlton in Maine in the US to include them in the project.
A dedicated web portal was created, and the images came in, each one a personal reflection of what this place means to that individual.
Through a digital process, those images were carefully assembled to create the larger pictures you see here. Each large image is made up of hundreds of smaller images. Look very closely, and you can see the individual pictures. Step back, and you see the main historic image relating to Rugby Radio.
This exhibition is just part of the story. An image has already been put in place in the refectory of Houlton School, made entirely of ceramic tiles. And another has been installed at St Gabriel’s School in Houlton.
These pictures look back at the history of Rugby Radio but have been produced with contributions from the people who live, learn, work, and play there today.
