This is part 1 of a driving video filmed by yours truly while travelling from the northern town of Speightstown to the Eagle Hall area in Barbados. In this part of the video, the journey starts at Major Walk in Speightstown near the entrance to the bus terminal and ends in Holetown, St. James past the iconic Sunset Crest shopping plaza.
Speightstown is one of the four main towns of Barbados. Located on the northwestern side of the island, it was once a busy sea port nicknamed 'Little Bristol' after the English port town. These days, Speightstown no longer has its own port like Bridgetown does, but is an active, vibrant town with a colonial charm, featuring street vendors, fisherfolk, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and even small hotels. There is even a museum, jetty, boardwalk and an esplanade in the area. The town is also home to St. Peter Parish church and located just south of the famous Port St. Charles and Port Ferdinand marinas.
Holetown, like Speightstown, is also one of Barbados' four main towns. Formerly known as Jamestown, it is the site of the first English settlement on the island. The town is full of hotels, shops, restaurants and even nightclubs. It is the home of three iconic shopping centres: the long-standing Sunset Crest, the Chattel House Village, and the upscale Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, built over a decade ago. A monument in front of the town centre commemorates the moment when the British first settled in Barbados at Holetown. The Holetown Festival takes place in this town in February and is a cultural celebration of the first British settlement.
