This animation shows a dog’s knee viewed from the side. The two largest bones are the femur (thigh) and tibia (shin). Unlike in humans, a dog’s tibia has a sloping upper surface. On average, it slopes backwards by 25-30 degrees. Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) allow the femur to 'roll downhill'. Tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) was first described in 1984. The original operation involved removal of a triangular ‘wedge’ of the tibia to produce a plateau angle of 0-5 degrees. Many variations of TPLO have been developed since 1984, but the original closing wedge procedure remains popular, especially for dogs with above average tibial plateau angles (over 30 degrees).
