The responsibility and transparency of food production is important for consumers. However, information about the food manufacturing chain is often difficult, if not impossible, to find. Arla Finland's launch of Arla Single Estate Organic Emmental is an exception. Its transparency is unique even on a global scale, as its journey from farm to store is opened in an unprecedented way using new technologies to offer information for the consumer.
"All this is made possible by Arla Milk Chain, developed by Arla Finland. It is an innovative digital application using blockchain technology that collects comprehensive information from the dairy farm, manufacturing and other areas of interest to consumers," says Arja Westman, Brand and Category Manager at Arla Finland. "According to studies, 67% of Finns would like the food they buy to be traceable all the way to the farm. We want to respond to this wish”.

Arla Milk Chain has attracted a lot of attention even outside Finland. Arla Finland’s Head of Digital and Technological Innovation Tomi Sirén believes that the exceptional transparency of Single Estate Organic Emmental birth journey will shake up the food industry's perceptions of what is possible at all.
"We have been developing the Milk Chain for over three years, and our goal is to start providing comprehensive manufacturing information on more Arla products. Expanding the application to other Nordic countries, for example, is also quite possible," Sirén says.
Information on the journey of Arla´s Single Estate Organic Emmental can be viewed in Arla Finland's online service. From the dairy farm it is possible to see, for example, the number of cows milked on the day of milking, the name of the worker on duty, and information on the outdoor activities, living space and feed of cows. In dairy, information on different manufacturing stages is stored in the Milk Chain. The cheese master's assessments of the taste, smell and texture of the cheese to be made, as well as the cheese package's journey to the store shelf, are also visible for everyone.
"The consumer can now peek behind the scenes of food production and see what is going on there and who bears responsibility for the quality of the product," says Arja Westman. "In the old days, people may well have known food producers personally. Modern technology will help us understand again where our food comes from."

Arla Single Estate Organic Emmental is artisan cheese, the production of which starts with high-quality Finnish organic milk produced at Tikka dairy farm in Kurikka and the Ranta dairy farm in Teuva. In addition to new digital solutions a lot of background work is required to enable the unique transparency. For example, the organic milk for the product must be kept separate from all other milk in transport and dairy. Making cheese also requires solid experience. Under the direction of the cheese master, the three-month preparation, from maturation to cellarization and cutting the loaf, is done with uncompromised professionalism in Porlammi cheese dairy.
