Chillino guide Jakob Chew is demonstrating another efficient way to clean a top rope anchor by being LOWERED off the rappel rings. As opposed to "cleaning the anchor via rappelling", this technique is more and more used by recreational climbers as it eliminates various added risk factors that are associated with rappelling. Opinions on which technique is "better" vary. Both - rappelling and lowering are valuable techniques for accomplishing the task of "cleaning the anchor". Here is what we can objectively say about the LOWERING technique.
Advantages:
fast(er) setup
risk minimized technique (compared to rappelling), less steps to transition and no "off belay"
Disadvantges of this technique:
increased wear and tear on fixed hardware (rappel rings), requires more frequent maintenance
increased wear and tear on rope through lowering
