Is cognition a kind of computation? Are our brains really like computers? Cognitive neuroscience aims to explain cognition, how we think, experience and sense the world around us, by uncovering computational and representational mechanisms across multiple levels of organization. This raises the question of what physical computation is– what does, and does not count as computing, and how representations come about. Recent advances in our understanding of both physical computation and representation help us illuminate the way that cognitive neuroscientists explain cognitive functions.
