In August 1944, near the town of Mortain, a single American Sherman tank faced a German Panzer counteroffensive.
Commanded by Staff Sergeant Lafayette G. Pool, the crew fought at close range, destroying tank after tank as German forces attempted to break through Allied lines.
When ammunition ran out, the crew withdrew — leaving behind a destroyed enemy column and a failed German attack.
By the end of the Normandy campaign, Pool’s crew had destroyed 258 enemy vehicles, the highest total of any American tank crew in World War II.
This is the true story of how five men, one tank, and perfect timing changed a battle.
