77th Republic Day of India 2026
India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026 with great pride and national fervour at Kartavya Path, New Delhi. The grand parade reflected the spirit of the Constitution, democratic values, cultural diversity, and the growing strength of a self-reliant India. The celebrations were held against the backdrop of the parade theme “Vividata Mein Ekta (Unity in Diversity)”, symbolising the harmonious coexistence of India’s diverse cultures, languages, and traditions. The Republic Day 2026 theme was centred on the 150th anniversary of India’s national song “Vande Mataram”, composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875, which played a vital role in inspiring the freedom struggle and nurturing the spirit of nationalism.
A major highlight of the 2026 celebrations was the presence of two distinguished leaders from the European Union as Chief Guests—Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. Their participation underlined the strengthening India–EU strategic partnership and India’s growing importance on the global stage, particularly in areas such as defence cooperation, technology, trade, and climate action.
The Republic Day Parade introduced several historic and modern elements. CRPF Assistant Commandant Simran Bala created history by commanding an all-male CRPF contingent, reflecting the evolving role of women in India’s security forces. Army units marched in battle array formations instead of purely ceremonial drills, highlighting combat readiness and modern military preparedness. New military units such as the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion and the Shaktiban Regiment participated for the first time. Another unique feature was the debut of an animal contingent featuring Bactrian camels named Galwan and Nubra, symbolising India’s frontier heritage and high-altitude operational strength. Indigenous defence capabilities were further showcased with systems like the Suryastra Rocket Launcher.
The parade strongly emphasised defence preparedness and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Indigenous platforms such as the BrahMos missile, Akash Air Defence System, and Arjun Main Battle Tank were displayed, demonstrating India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The Tri-Services Tableau themed “Operation Sindoor” showcased coordinated operations of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The aerial display featured advanced aircraft including Rafale, Su-30 MKI, and MiG-29 fighter jets, along with Apache helicopters and the indigenous LCH Prachand.
A total of 30 tableaux participated, including 17 from States and Union Territories and 13 from Ministries and Departments. The Ministry of Culture tableau, conceptualised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, traced the 150-year journey of “Vande Mataram”. Cultural performances by around 2,500 artists added colour and vibrancy to the celebrations. State tableaux highlighted India’s rich heritage and development achievements, including Madhya Pradesh’s tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar, Kerala’s Water Metro and digital literacy, Chhattisgarh’s Tribal Digital Museum, Assam’s Asharikandi terracotta craft, Punjab’s commemoration of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji, Maharashtra’s Ganeshotsav legacy, and Manipur’s GI-tagged products.
On this occasion, President Draupadi Murmu approved 70 gallantry awards and 301 military decorations. Key honours included the Ashoka Chakra to Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, Vishisht Seva Medal to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and Kirti and Shaurya Chakras to several brave personnel. Overall, the 77th Republic Day celebrations projected the image of a united, confident, and forward-looking India rooted in its heritage and committed to progress.
