Sheep Tails??
----------------------
Most people are well familiar with Oxtail (and almost everyone in South Africa has the "best" soup or potjie recipe)... but in case you didn't know, sheep are born with tails too and removing lamb's tails (aka “tail-docking”) is common practice in the wool and meat industries... and these make for a delicious snack!
In a very rudimentary fashion, lamb tails can be thrown whole onto a fire and cooked skin and all. When cooked, the skin is simply peeled off and the meat is sucked off the bone. There are a few festivals here in South Africa, especially in the Karoo and Free State, where you can enjoy these delicacies cooked as is over an open fire with nothing but some salt for seasoning.
Great for snacking
------------------------------
Lamb's tails are nowhere near the size of oxtail, so not unlike prawns, you'll need a whole plate full of them to make a meal of it.
They're fantastic as a snack however, and more often than not more than a few will go missing straight from the grill... BraaiMaster's prerogative and all ;-)
In this episode of BraaiBoyTV however, I do a little more to them than that.
Give us some options BraaiBoy!
---------------------------------------------------
An old-school, simple, yet classic recipe ... "just the way granny made them". Salt, pepper, lemon & some rosemary is all we need for this one (OK, in the episode I added some Jimmy's Sauces & some braai spice... Gran would still approve):
... The second batch I made with a curry flavour. I went with a very simple curry, vineger & sugar mix, and let the tails marinade in that for a few hours. The curry recipe takes a bit longer, because we want them to marinade in that curry for a few hours, but it's well worth it!
P.S. Lamb tails can be very tough... so it's not a bad idea to boil them for an hour or so before popping them onto the grill. Either way, whether they've been boiled or not, lamb tails turn out best when done on a lower or even indirect heat for a lengthy period of time.
Do you have any recipes or ideas that you would like to see me try out? Let me know in the comments below and if I use your idea there will be a reward in it for you. I don't know what that reward is just yet... but there will be a reward, and it will be cool (public high-5's are cool, right?) ;-)
