From "The Library of Babel" to "The Book of Sand", Jorge Luis Borges astounds and obsesses with his complexity. To Borges, literature was its own history. A history that entangles itself backwards into an obscure past of mythology, salvation, and damnation. Though in the register of mythic world, Borges, a definite agnostic, often touched on the mythology of the Norse and the mirror of Christianity. Borges found them both to interesting veins which to analyze history, literature, and destiny. The objects which emerge into Borges short stories are the obsessive fantasies of this other world—one either of dreams or shadows.

He throws the eponymous "Disc of Odin" into the twilight of a world, a twilight of Ragnarok. The Disc is an impossible object of one side that compels obsession. The mathematical impossibility of the disc escapes the logic of the world it exists in. In the skald's voice, Borges tells of the fatal end of the world in "El Disco", "Ulrikke", and "The Witness". The last howl of a wolf that soon fades away forever. The lost images of Gods who are reduced to strange, wandering ghosts. Or perhaps they are the old stranger we welcome in?

There are those who are only king in dreams and stories.
