The swearing of oaths whether it's on an oath ring or the tip of your sword should never be taken lightly. "My word is my bond" holds no weight without a sacred item such as an oath ring to swear upon. Our ancestors knew this and lived by it, if there was no oath ring handy then they swore on other such beloved items as told in the video. In the Asatru religion oath rings are still treasured and used to this day.
