Iran Once Supported Pakistan… History vs National Interest? India’s Foreign Policy Decoded!
🎙️ By: Shivam Tiwari Sir (Khan Global Studies)
“Iran provided money, aircraft and weapons to Pakistan to fight against India in 1965 and 1971” – a senior Indian politician.
However, During the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars, Iran under Mohammad Reza Pahlavi reportedly leaned toward Pakistan. At that time, Iran was also aligned with the United States and Israel.
Everything changed after the Iranian Revolution, when the Shah was overthrown and Ruhollah Khomeini established an Islamic Republic.
Post-1979, US-Iran relations turned hostile, while India-Iran ties improved. In 2001, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Iran, strengthening strategic cooperation.
Today, India maintains strong trade with the United States, imports heavily from China, and has trade ties with the United Kingdom despite historical conflicts.
So the big question:
👉 Does India frame foreign policy based on history?
👉 Or based on present national interest?
Foreign policy is rarely emotional — it is strategic.
