After nearly 50 years the epic Boeing 747 has finished service with Qantas.
On Tuesday 16 June 2020, VH-OEE, Nullabor, tookoff from Sydney Airport for the last time, as QF6001 bound for Los Angeles LAX where it will spend a day or two being prepared for long term storage, before continuing to Mojave CA for retirement. It looks increasingly unlikely we will ever see the 747 in Qantas service again as they were due for retirement in 2020 anyway, and demand for international travel to/from Australia is expected to be low for the foreseeable future.
VH-OEE is a Boeing 747-438ER (Extended Range) and it was delivered brand new to Qantas on 6 December 2002. It was the first ER 747-400 built and Qantas was the only airline to operate the passenger version. Qantas purchased six ERs primarily to carry higher payloads on their long trans Pacific routes.
