This video illustrates the system described in the following paper, which contains all the technical details:
G. Álvarez-Narciandi, J. Laviada and F. Las-Heras, "Freehand mm-wave imaging with a compact MIMO radar," in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, doi: 10.1109/TAP.2020.3013745.
It shows a demonstrator of freehand scanning with a tiny radar (developed by Google-and Infineon in the framework of Project Soli). This radar is already available in some smartphone for a different purpose (gesture recognition).
In this video, we show how hand movements, which are easily guided by the software (no previous experience is required), are used to enhance the resolution of the multistatic radar, building a much larger scanning area, if compared with the radar at a single position. The main consequence is that images with a resolution under 1mm can be achieved.
The video also shows how this images can be achieved even in the presence of some materials such as paper and some plastics, enabling to see through objects.
