Historical Background
Toulon has been a strategic naval stronghold since the 15th century. Its importance skyrocketed under King Louis XIV, when the famous military engineer Vauban fortified the city into an "impregnable" port.
The harbor tells a story of resilience; during World War II, much of the port was destroyed during heavy bombings and the tragic scuttling of the French fleet in 1942. The post-war era brought a unique modernist transformation, spearheaded by architect Fernand Pouillon, whose distinctive apartment blocks now define the waterfront silhouette. Today, Toulon remains the primary base for the French Mediterranean Fleet and the home port of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
