Описание: Political tensions have escalated over the Centre’s move to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Congress has launched nationwide protests, accusing the BJP of undermining Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy and diluting a landmark welfare scheme.

In Delhi, Congress leader Udit Raj led a protest by the All India Unorganised Workers Congress, burning a copy of the proposed Bill. He claimed the renaming is an attack on Gandhi’s legacy and threatens rural labourers’ legal right to employment.

In Karnataka, senior Congress leaders including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar protested at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi. Ministers Dinesh Gundu Rao and M B Patil criticised the move as ideologically driven and called it an insult to the Father of the Nation.

The Congress warns that millions of rural beneficiaries could be affected, while the Centre insists the new Bill increases guaranteed workdays to 125 per household.
