Biography and career Born in Figeac, Boyer began making theater, but found success in European and Hollywood films during the 1920s and 1930s. He continued to make films for the next several decades. Charles Boyer came to work as a partner with the divas Marlene Dietrich (The Garden of Allah, 1936) and Greta Garbo (Maria Walewska, 1937) but it was his work in Algiers (1938) that caused his initial popularity.

He is currently best remembered for his role in the 1944 film Gaslight where he tries to convince Ingrid Bergman's character that he was losing his mind. In 1950, he appeared on the Broadway stage with one of his biggest roles, as Don Juan, in the third act of George Bernard Shaw's Man and Superman. It was directed by actor Charles Laughton. Laughton co-starred as the devil, with Cedric Hardwicke as the statue of the commander killed by Don Juan, and Agnes Moorehead as Doña Ana, daughter of the commander, one of Juan's last conquests.

The production was a critical success, and was recorded by Columbia Records, one of the first recordings of a non-musical drama. Until 2006, however, it had never been released on CD. In 1948 Charles Boyer was made a member of the French Legion of Honor. He continued acting until a few years before his death. His last great performance was in a High Lama movie in a musical version of Lost Horizon (1973).

For his contributions to the film and television industry, Charles Boyer has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6300 Hollywood Blvd. Two days after his wife, British actress Pat Paterson, died of cancer, Charles Boyer committed suicide by overdosing on Seconal. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City, California, United States along with his wife and son Michael Charles Boyer, who had committed suicide in 1965 at the age of 21.
