M.E. Cunningham Elementary in Austin, Texas, has creatively prioritized several initiatives, including social-emotional learning (SEL). Art teacher Darla Caughey explains that by weaving SEL into her art class, she gives students an outlet to address bullying and racism and explore empathetic ways to appreciate each other’s differences. Darla now works for the Austin Independent School District (AISD) as an SEL Specialist, working to promote SEL implementation on an even larger scale.
AISD is one of the first districts in the nation to commit to fully incorporating SEL into every classroom. As of 2014-15, SEL has been implemented in 101 schools serving 80 percent of the students in AISD, and the goal is to reach all students by 2015-16.
