Bur Dubai (Arabic: Bur Dubayy, "Dubai land") is the historic district on the western side of Dubai Creek, opposite Deira. The term “bur” (meaning “dry land”) reflects its traditional separation from the older parts of the city across the creek.
1. Historic & Cultural Heart
• Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood (Al Bastakiya): A beautifully preserved quarter of narrow lanes and wind-tower houses showcasing traditional Emirati architecture.
• Al Fahidi Fort (Dubai Museum): Built in 1787, this is one of Dubai’s oldest buildings. Converted into the Dubai Museum in 1971, it traces the city’s evolution from fishing village to modern metropolis.
• Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House: Former ruler’s residence, now a museum offering photo galleries and memorabilia from pre-oil Dubai.
• Al Shindagha (Aral Shindagha): Historic district that was once the seat of the ruling family; today hosts museums and restored architecture.
2. Religious and Cultural Sites
• Grand Mosque: Located centrally in Bur Dubai, it features the tallest minaret in the city.
• Iranian Mosque (Ali Ibn Abi Talib Mosque): Built in 1979, known for its striking blue Persian tilework and unique architecture.
• Hindu Temple (Krishna Mandir): Established in the 1960s, part of a temple complex in Bur Dubai; the Shiva Mandir and Gurudwara were relocated to Jebel Ali in 2023, but Krishna Mandir remains.
3. Souks & Shopping
• Textile Souk & Meena Bazaar: Bustling markets famous for textiles, South Asian fashion, jewelry, and bargains. This area is sometimes dubbed “Little India.”
• Spice Souk & Al Seef: Vibrant lanes filled with aromatic spices, and Al Seef blends charming old architecture with modern retail.
• Coins Museum: A niche museum located in Al Bastakiya dedicated to historic currencies of the region.
4. Scenic & Transport Charm
• Dubai Creek & Abras: Traditional wooden abras ferry passengers across the creek for just 1 AED, offering a timeless commute between Bur Dubai and Deira.
