The video of it keeping Tampa General Hospital out of floodwaters during Hurricane Helene "wowed" folks across the country, and now, St. Petersburg is getting their own AquaFence to protect a critical piece of wastewater infrastructure.
It was an easy sell to St. Pete City Council members who on Thursday unanimously approved spending more than $600,000 to buy an AquaFence to be placed at Lift Station #85 near Albert Whitted Airport.
“Like everyone else, I was very excited. We all saw the videos of Tampa General Hospital and was like, 'How can we get that?'” Council Member Lisset Hanewicz said.
The roughly 500-foot-long and 9-foot-high barrier will protect the station from up to 15 feet of potential storm surge, allowing it to stay in operation during flooding events.
