Tutorial on ear cleaning in dogs.
One of the most commonly seen veterinary ailments is ear infections (also called otitis externa). Learning how to properly clean the ears is critical to normal care of ears but is also part of a treatment plan when an ear becomes infected.
Infected ears will produce far more wax and debris than a normal ear and proper removal of this wax is critical to the success of treatment. Simply putting an ear treatment on top of a goopy ear full of wax is not going to work very well.
We recommend waiting at least two hours between an ear cleaning and an ear treatment. We also do not recommend instillation of ear cleaning solution or treatment if the eardrum is perforated.
Extra note on Standard Poodles and all Doodle dogs and dogs with hairy ears:
We do not recommend routinely plucking ear hairs. We recommend good ear cleaning techniques and measures to ensure good ear health without removing the dog's normal ear hairs.
These hairs may grow from deep within the ear and plucking of ear hairs only rips out the top hairs that can be reached. Ripping out the hairs can irritate the skin and allow for bacteria and yeast to thrive, and the dog's ears may become infected more easily.
Only under special circumstances may your veterinarian be required to remove some of the hairs because of an infection or impaction. Plucking ear hairs can be painful for the dog and is not recommended to be done routinely when there is no veterinary reason for this procedure.
