Beginner guitar players generally learn a chord and start strumming without any idea as to what the correct strum pattern should be. Strum patterns are the patterns used for strumming a chord progression.

Some chord progression require the guitar player to only use down strokes, while others require the player to only use up strokes.

In order to keep a good strum pattern consistent, hold your guitar pick lightly so that you don't strain yourself. You also want to keep your wrist loose and swinging like a pendulum.
