In Kerala, a strong political feeling is slowly building before the 2026 Assembly elections. Surveys, opinion polls, and public mood all suggest one clear thing, many people are unhappy with the current Left Democratic Front government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In fact, more than half the voters say they want the government changed.

On paper, this should be good news for the Congress led United Democratic Front, also known as the UDF. Anti incumbency usually helps the opposition. But in Kerala, things are not so simple. Despite favourable surveys and visible dissatisfaction, the Congress is not confident. Instead of celebration, there is anxiety.

A small but meaningful example explains this situation well. During a local pre poll survey in Thrikkakara constituency, survey workers did not ask people about the performance of the LDF government or who they wanted as Chief Minister. Instead, they focused on one question, who should be the UDF candidate. This itself shows the mindset of the Congress. The party is more worried about its own strength, organisation, and candidate quality than attacking the ruling Left.

Even though local self government elections went in favour of the UDF and Muslim vote consolidation after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls helped Congress, the party leadership knows that public anger does not automatically turn into votes. People may be unhappy, but they are not united behind one alternative.

Surveys show that while a majority wants the LDF out, around 40 percent still firmly support the Left. This means the LDF still has a strong and loyal vote base. At the same time, the remaining dissatisfied voters are divided. Some may support the Congress, but many are drifting towards the BJP led NDA. This creates a three cornered contest, Left, Congress, and BJP.

This triangular fight is dangerous for the Congress. Anti incumbency gets split between the UDF and the BJP, which helps the LDF in close contests. Even if the BJP does not win many seats, its vote share can change results by cutting into Congress votes.

Another major issue is organisation. Leaked internal surveys by Congress strategists reportedly show weak booth level structure, poor coordination in districts, leadership gaps, and internal factionalism. In many constituencies, contests are expected to be very close, not one sided. Without strong grassroots machinery, even public anger cannot be converted into victory.

There is also a clear gap between state level mood and local level voting. Many voters may dislike the government, but still support their local LDF MLAs because of welfare schemes, constituency work, and personal networks. This weakens the impact of state wide anti incumbency.

Meanwhile, the Left has adopted a smart strategy. It is localising elections. Instead of fighting on ideology alone, LDF leaders are focusing on development work, welfare delivery, and constituency performance. This helps them protect seats even when the overall mood is negative.
