I went court shoe shopping for tennis… and it turned into a full biomechanics lesson.
Most athletic shoes today are extremely stiff through the sole. While they may feel “supportive,” that rigidity can actually block your ability to roll through your entire foot. And when you can’t roll through your foot, you lose critical ground reaction force — the force your body depends on to activate your deeper core, generate power, and maintain an efficient gait.
If you don’t use it, you lose it.
When shoes are too stiff:
The midfoot stays rigid
Motion gets concentrated at the ball of the foot
Force isn’t dispersed efficiently
Core recruitment decreases
Stress travels up to the hips and back
In this video, I show you exactly what I look for when choosing a court shoe:
How much the sole actually bends
Whether the flexibility is distributed or forced into a single hinge point
How the shoe allows (or blocks) proper foot mechanics
The right amount of flexibility helps you:
Roll through your foot naturally
Improve ground contact
Activate deeper core stability
Enhance strength, power, and mobility
Protect your back, hips, and entire kinetic chain
Before you buy your next pair of athletic shoes, test them. Bend them. Feel them. Your whole body depends on what’s happening at your feet.
