Medjool Dates & My Blood Sugar CGM Experiment 📈
I’ve always heard mixed opinions about dates and blood sugar, so I decided to test it myself using my CGM (continuous glucose monitor). Some people report no spike, while others see huge spikes—likely due to differences in insulin resistance.
So, what happened to me? A massive glucose spike! My blood sugar shot up from 5.5 mmol/L to 11.7 mmol/L after eating Medjool dates. 😳
Dates are often marketed as a “health food,” but they’re 60-80% sugar—a mix of glucose and fructose. While glucose raises blood sugar directly, fructose is processed by the liver and can contribute to insulin resistance, fatty liver, and metabolic issues over time. Some people might see smaller spikes because their insulin response overcompensates, pushing glucose down. Others, like me, get a big spike.
My verdict? 🚫 No more dates for me. The sugar load is just too high, and I’m prioritising optimal glucose for long-term health and longevity.
