From the early use of pieced-together hides to fashion bedcoverings and clothing to individuals today making textile art for wall displays, the production of patchwork in South African has been an important aspect of the country’s material culture history. This presentation will provide an overview of that history, personal stories of the current quilting scene, and an introduction to using the Quilt Index (http://www.quiltindex.org) to access the quilt collections in many South African museums and at the Michigan State University Museum.
Marsha MacDowell is Professor and Curator of Folk Arts and Quilt Studies, Michigan State University Museum and Director of The Quilt Index. She has written on many facets of quilt history and is currently editing a volume on South African quilt history.
Felicity Khan comes from a line of creative women who were all involved in working with fabric. A retired banking administrator, she took up quilting when she became a mother. Now also a quilting teacher who promotes equality, justice and peace, Khan has exhibited within South Africa and co-coordinated Quilting Outreach Groups for women in under-resourced and underserved communities.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: "a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure."
Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now has over 3,600 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators, and corporate sponsors. With access to our museum-quality exhibition program, SAQA members challenge the boundaries of art and change perceptions about contemporary fiber art.
As a part of SAQA’s dynamic creative community, members can take their artwork and career to the next level. We offer a wide range of exclusive resources, mentorship programs, and professional opportunities.
In addition, SAQA documents the art quilt movement – our publications include full-color exhibition catalogs, the Art Quilt Quarterly magazine, and our book, Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation.
