Sri Lanka’s President urges legalization of IMF agreement for swift economic recovery

Описание: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has stressed the need for the legalization of the agreement with the IMF, which he said will ensure that the benefits reach the people of the island nation swiftly. Wickremesinghe, addressing a gathering, said that collaboration with the International Monetary Fund is a crucial step to revitalize Sri Lanka’s economy and added that it was the nation's final opportunity for economic recovery. He highlighted Sri Lanka's history of reversing decisions after agreeing with the lender and said legalization will ensure no turning away after agreeing with the lender. Notably, earlier last month, Sri Lankan Minister Bandula Gunawardena echoed a similar stance as he highlighted the violation of the past 16 agreements with the lender, which has led the country to bankruptcy. However, the country is slowly recovering, with the IMF too reaching a staff-level agreement, enabling the island nation to access 337 million dollars from the nearly 3 billion dollars bailout approved in 2023.
