Narges and Afsaneh's Hard Day; Serving for the Joy of Ali's Soul

A day when they would have to face Ali’s memories again; the same boy whose empty place still burns in everyone’s hearts.

Early in the morning, while the fog was still sitting on the mountain, Narges’ phone rang.
Sarmast, the shopkeeper, said in a calm and subdued voice:

**“Narges, dear… today the village is holding a ceremony for Ali. Many people are coming. If you and Afsaneh can, come help us prepare food for everyone.”

Narges was silent for a moment; her heart sank again.
Afsaneh, realizing what was going on, put a hand on Narges’ shoulder and said:

“We’re going… we’re going for Ali.”

They set off towards Ali’s village with heavy hearts.
When they arrived, a large crowd had gathered in the large courtyard of the village. The sound of humming, crying, and reciting the Fatiha had filled the air.

Narges and Afsaneh went to the kitchen. The large pots were on the fire and the coals were burning red hot.
Without any time to think, they rolled up their sleeves and began:

They washed the rice

Chopped the vegetables

Stirred the pots

Bringing tea and water for the guests

Sweat was pouring down their foreheads, but they did not give up.

They tried their best to maintain Ali’s respect in the best possible way.

When the food was served, everyone thanked them with satisfaction.

People said:

“May Ali’s soul rest in peace… May God bless you, you worked hard.”

These sentences, although short, slightly eased the heavy sadness in Narges and Afsaneh’s hearts.

It was as if they were able to distance themselves from that great pain for a few moments.

When the ceremony was over, the two tired but calm women, accompanied by several residents, went to the cemetery.

The evening breeze was blowing and the fresh soil of Ali’s grave still smelled of longing.

Narges sat by the grave, tears gently flowing from the corners of her eyes.
Afsaneh also placed her hand on the gravestone and said:

"Ali... Today, we worked for the people with your love. May your soul be happy."

They recited the Fatiha together and a deep silence fell between them; a silence in which there were many unspoken words.

When they returned to the hut, although the sadness was still there, they had calmed down a little...
It was as if Ali was also looking down at them from the sky and smiling.

Today, after a long time,
Narges and Afsaneh were able to breathe a little easier for the first time...

For Ali, for his soul, for his memory.
