Hatching is a 2022 Finnish horror psychological thriller written and directed by Hanna Bergholm. It is about a 12-year-old gymnast named Tinja who finds a mysterious egg and raises it as her pet, unaware that it is a dangerous creature that feeds on blood.

The movie explores themes of parental pressure, social media obsession, body horror, identity crisis, and dark fantasy. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2022, and won two awards at the Gérardmer Film Festival.

The ending of Hatching is quite shocking and ambiguous. It shows that Tinja’s mother accidentally kills her with a knife while trying to kill Alli, the monster that hatched from the egg. Alli then drinks Tinja’s blood and completes her transformation into a human-like creature. She stands up and calls Tinja’s mother “mother”.

This could mean that Alli is a mimic that can take on the appearance and personality of its host, or that Tinja’s mind has been replaced by Alli’s. The latter is less likely, as it would imply that Tinja was never real.

I think the ending is open to interpretation and could also represent Tinja’s liberation from her mother’s control and expectations, or her rebirth as a new being.
