The Archaeological Site of Kamiros is less crowded than the amazing ancient site in Lindos. In this video tour of Kamiros, which is located on the northwest coast of Rhodes near Kalavarda, we walk through the Ancient Greek and Roman ruins. Also know as Camerius, it was an important city in ancient Rhodes (Dodecanese). These are preserved ruins of the Hellenistic city of Kamiros. It was rebuilt after the 226 huge earthquake.
The settlement was started by the Mycenaean Greeks before historical records were kept and later incorporated by the Dorians. The foundations of the temples were started in the 8th century BC (Before Christ) - that is old! Speaking of Jesus, I looked for Christian graffiti around this site, but did not find any. An earthquake of 226 BC destroyed the houses and temple. Some rebuilding took place but an EQ in 142 AD destroyed the town to it’s current state. Well, it’s been excavated sine the late 1800’s, so better now then just after the devastating earthquake.
“The ancient city was built on three levels. At the top of the hill was the acropolis, with the temple complex of Athena Kameiras and the stoa. A covered reservoir having a capacity of 600 cubic meters of water—enough for up to 400 families—was constructed about the sixth century BC. Later, the stoa was built over the reservoir. The stoa consisted of two rows of Doric columns with rooms for shops or lodgings in the rear.” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camirus
The layout of the city streets are typical of Hellenistic urban designs, with its division of public and private buildings. The main temple was likely for their god Apollo and was from the 2nd BC period. The cistern is one of the most impressive in all of Greece. That is up top by the acropolis. Near the Athena Cameras. On this top plateau it was an impressive stoa of 200 meters long, as you can see in the video well from the bottom of the site, looking upward.
Up top you get a great panoramic view of the sea and the entire ancient Kamiros site. Kamiros was the smallest of the three ancient cities forming the Rhodian state. This site is in the western part of the island, with a lot of wind. It was more isolated and conservative than commercial Lindos and aristocratic Ialysos. It retained a rural character throughout antiquity. Homer described it as a “arginoceis” meaning it had fertile argillaceous soil.
The bathhouse was well preserved and walking in the old houses was unique, even if the walls are half gone and no roofs. You can almost feel the ancient Greeks walking the stoned streets of Kamiros!
