The Daily Mail just published an article calling the royal family's wealth grotesque. Their greed revolting. Their entitlement gross.
The Daily Mail. The publication that has defended the monarchy for decades. The paper that prints palace briefings as gospel. The outlet that has attacked Harry and Meghan relentlessly while protecting the institution at every turn.
And now AN Wilson, a respected author and commentator, is writing in their pages that the British monarchy is in abject crisis. That whether it survives depends on whether the King, the Prince of Wales and the other members of the royal family can grasp the significance of what has happened.
Read that again. Whether it survives.
This is not a republican publication. This is not a fringe outlet. This is the Daily Mail asking whether the monarchy will survive. That should tell you everything about where we are.
And here is the crucial line. This is not just a story about the black sheep of the family, Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, getting into terrible trouble.
It is not just about Andrew. That is what the article is saying. The rot is not confined to one disgraced prince. The rot is systemic. The greed is institutional. The entitlement runs through the entire family.
The article talks about the gross expenses claimed from foreign trips that you pay for. Your taxes funding their jaunts abroad. Your money paying for their travel and their staff and their luxury while they lecture you about tightening your belt.
It talks about the grotesque wealth of Edward, Anne and Sophie. The working royals who are supposed to justify the institution's existence. The ones who are supposed to represent value for money. Even they are implicated in this picture of excess and entitlement.
And it talks about the millions pouring into William's pockets. Not Andrew's pockets. William's. The future King. The man who is supposed to represent the reformed, modern, slimmed down monarchy. The man who is supposed to be different from his uncle.
Millions pouring into his pockets. That is the Daily Mail's framing. Not a Sussex supporter on social media. The Daily Mail.
Something has shifted. Something fundamental.
For years the strategy was clear. Protect the institution by sacrificing individuals. Andrew became the problem so that the monarchy could remain the solution. Harry and Meghan became the villains so that William and Kate could remain the heroes. Every scandal was contained by focusing blame on one person while insisting the system itself was sound.
But that strategy is failing. Andrew's arrest has pulled back a curtain that cannot be closed again. The questions are no longer about one bad apple. The questions are about the entire orchard.
How much do they cost us? What do we get in return? Why do they have so much while so many have so little? Why are their expenses gross while public services are cut? Why is their wealth grotesque while nurses use food banks?
These questions were always there. But they were suppressed. They were dismissed as republican talking points. They were memory holed by a press that depended on palace access and preferred not to bite the hand that fed them exclusives.
Now the Daily Mail is asking these questions. Now AN Wilson is calling the wealth grotesque and the entitlement revolting. Now the paper that built its brand on royal coverage is wondering aloud whether the institution will survive.
The King needs to grasp the significance of what has happened. That is what Wilson is saying. Charles needs to understand that this is an existential moment. Not a PR problem to be managed. Not a news cycle to be weathered. An existential crisis that threatens the future of the monarchy itself.
But here is what I do not think Charles grasps. And what William certainly does not grasp.
You cannot lecture people about the cost of living while millions pour into your pockets. You cannot ask for public sympathy while your expenses are paid by struggling taxpayers. You cannot demand respect for the institution while the institution protects predators and punishes whistleblowers.
The social contract that sustained the monarchy for generations was simple. We pay for you, and in return you represent something. Duty. Service. Continuity. A living symbol of the nation that transcends politics and partisanship.
This is not just about Andrew. That is the message. This is about all of them. The expenses. The wealth. The millions pouring into William's pockets.
The crisis is institutional. And whether the institution survives depends on whether they can grasp what that means.
I do not think they can. I do not think they will. I think they will continue to brief and spin and manage until there is nothing left to manage.
And we will all watch it happen in real time.
