During the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed I filmed the new car from Axel Turbo, a 3-rotor 20B Volvo 740 DRIFT Machine!
The Volvo 740 is a classic. Not because it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made, but because it's a staple station wagon, popular among families who needed a lot of interior space before the age of SUVs. Sure, enthusiasts see these bricks as a treasure trove or a perfect base for a sleeper, but the truth is, there's nothing outstanding about the 740... until one crazy gearhead gets his hands on one and makes it a showstopper.
We're talking about Axel Pedro Hildebrand, who recently drove a Volvo 740 at the famous Hillclimb amid the festivities in West Sussex in the UK. But it's not just an ordinary 740 - it's stripped down to bare metal and was given a heart transplant. The new power plant is a Mazda three-rotor 20B rotary engine, paired with a turbocharger and the sheer will of a bonkers builder.
What's even crazier is that this particular 740 that climbed the hills was rebuilt a few days before the Goodwood Festival of Speed. You see, Hildebrand had been working on this Volvo project for months. In fact, it appears that his YouTube Channel, Axel.Turbo., started with the sole purpose of documenting the process of putting up this bonkers "family drift car."
And, as you'd expect, there was plenty of fabrication work employed, including roll cages and custom subframes. But perhaps the most impressive work done here was the use of carbon Kevlar body panels a la Koenig C62, which aren't visible in the final version because of the Arlon wraps, courtesy of Funkee Fish. They were removed when it was stripped down days before Goodwood to spray Steelit paint on the chassis and roll cage, then reattached.
As for power, it's unclear which turbocharger was in use during the hillclimb, but Hildebrand's previous videos show a Garrett G45-1500 turbocharger. Power output during the final dyno run prior to Goodwood was 761 horsepower at the wheels, so around 800-850 at the crank. Evidently, those numbers were enough to put on a show, shredding tires as the Volvo sidewinds up the hill.
