The Wankie Campaign of 1967 was one of the most significant clashes in Southern Africa’s liberation history. This video explores how ZIPRA (Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army) fighters, alongside South Africa’s Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), crossed into Rhodesia (modern Zimbabwe) in a bold attempt to open a guerrilla front against Ian Smith’s minority government. We examine the battles fought in the Wankie Game Reserve, the involvement of the South African Defence Force and Rhodesian Security Forces, and the heavy losses suffered on both sides. More than a failed incursion, the Wankie Campaign exposed the difficulty of suppressing African nationalism, demonstrated early cooperation between liberation movements, and shaped the trajectory of the Zimbabwean war of liberation.
If you’re interested in African history, Rhodesian Bush War, ZAPU, ZANU, ANC, apartheid, and the Cold War in Africa, this is a must-watch.
