lobal presence of Tejas
Last year in the month of November, Tejas has roared in the skies of Dubai with its breath-taking performance and manoeuvres. Even Pakistan Air Force team could not resist from having a glimpse of the small beast. Proving its metal and acrobatic performance to the entire world in Dubai air show, three LCA Tejas MK1 fighter jet of FOC version is participating in Singapore Air show 2022 from 15th to 18th February.
India has started participating in these air shows with an aim to tap into the light combat aircraft and trainer aircraft market. So far, three countries have shown interest in the HAL Tejas which are Malaysia, Argentina, and Egypt.
Malaysia – in search of FLIT-LCA
The Malaysian Defense Ministry had published a request for bid for the supply and delivery of new light combat aircraft also known as Fighter Lead in Trainer-Light Combat Aircraft (FLIT-LCA). The RFI was issued on 22nd June 2021 - the same month when Chinese military aircrafts reported coming close to Malaysian Exclusive Economic Zone. Now, as per Malaysian Air Force “Capability 55” (CAP55) future force structure program, RMAF wants three FLIT-LCA squadrons by 2055. The new procurement initiative would fill the requirement for the first of these three squadrons.
Who are the contenders?
Now, the fight for Malaysian trainer jet program has taken interesting shift. Previously, Malaysian air force has invited proposals from various competitors including: FA-50 light attack aircraft developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) & M-346FA Fighter Attack aircraft developed by Leonardo, of Italy. Russia has two offers which are Yak-130 combat trainer aircraft & Mig-35. Now as per the latest update Turkish Aerospace Industries has offered its yet-to-be-built Hurjet. In addition, as per some news portals JF-17 of China is out of the bid. Out of these 6 competitors, only Tejas MK1A, MIG-35 & Turkish Hurjet have agreed to comply with the Malaysian government-mandated requirement to source or procure at least 30 percent of products/services from domestic companies in Malaysia. The Turkish Hurjet has recently been quite discussed and compared with LCA Tejas, therefore in today’s video we will compare the LCA Tejas MK1 with the Hurjet of Turkey.
TAI Hurjet
The TAI Hürjet is an ADVANCED JET TRAINER AND LIGHT ATTACK AIRCRAFT. It is a single engine, tandem-seat aircraft with modern avionics. It aims to fulfil international and Turkish Air Force requirements by replacing aging T-38s as Advanced Jet Trainers (AJT) and F-5s as Acrobatic Team Aircrafts with a modern high performance multirole aircraft.
Hurjet vs Tejas: Dimensions
To begin with let’s compare the dimensions. The Hurjet has a length of 13.6m, wingspan of 9.5m, hight of 5.1m and wing area of 35m sq. The LCA Tejas has a length of 13.2m, wingspan of 8.2m, hight of 4.4m and wing area of 38.4m sq. From the comparison of dimension there are two important points that we can derive. First the Tejas has a compact size when compared to Hurjet in terms of Wingspan, length & Height – which means Tejas has overall smaller Radar Cross section than the Hurjet. Second the Wing Area of Tejas is more than that of Hurjet which allows it to have more payload lift capability.
