That question may seem strange, but Mali is accusing Ukraine of playing a role in a devastating ambush in country’s remote, northern Kidal region that left dozens of Malian soldiers and Wagner mercenaries dead.

A coalition of Tuareg rebels, known as the Strategic Framework for the Defense of the People of Azawad (CSP-DPA), claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred near a border town called Tinzaouaten.

Shortly after this, Mali and Niger cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine.

This, however, is only one of many incidents that speak to a growing rivalry between Moscow and Kiev for influence on the continent.
