Описание: Over the past week, Iran has launched hundreds of drones and missiles toward Israel, escalating tensions across the Middle East. While a few projectiles managed to penetrate Israel’s defenses, the vast majority were intercepted mid-air. This is largely due to Israel’s highly advanced multi-layered missile defense system, considered one of the most sophisticated in the world.

Israel’s defense architecture is designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats — including short-range rockets, drones, cruise missiles, and long-range ballistic missiles. Developed primarily by Israeli defense companies with significant support and funding from the United States, the system has been extensively battle-tested in conflicts involving Iran and its regional proxies, especially during the major escalations of 2025 and continuing into 2026.

The defense system works in overlapping layers, similar to the layers of an onion. Each layer is designed to intercept specific types of threats at different ranges and altitudes.

The first layer is Iron Dome, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries with U.S. support. Iron Dome is designed to intercept short-range rockets, artillery shells, mortars, and drones within a range of up to around 70 kilometers. Using advanced radar and command systems, it calculates the trajectory of incoming rockets and launches Tamir interceptor missiles only if the projectile threatens populated areas or critical infrastructure.

To address the high cost of interceptor missiles, Israel has also developed Iron Beam, a directed-energy laser system. Using a powerful 100-kilowatt laser, Iron Beam can destroy aerial threats at extremely low cost — reportedly around $2 per interception — and can fire continuously as long as power is available. The system became operational in 2025 and saw its first combat use in 2026.
