Here's the next episode of Breaking Chords with 'Eddie Van Halen-Style Arpeggios.'
Edward Van Halen is a guitar legend of massive importance to guitarists everywhere and for me personally - he was the entire reason I picked up a guitar and wanted to start playing. His music inspired me from the start and his talent and legacy continue to motivate, direct, inspire and influence me to this day.
I've studied a lot of different styles of music and musical concepts over the years, but at the end of the day - I can always "come home" to some Van Halen to revisit my roots, which I do as often as possible or when the feeling/need arises.
This lesson takes a look at some very famous and popular tapping phrases from EVH, but the way we're tackling, learning, and breaking these ideas down in this lesson is VERY different.
For starters, we're going to disassemble Eddie's tapping licks into arpeggios/chords, which will allow us to dissect and visually see what is happening behind the scenes when you hear or play through tapped figures of music like Eddie's.
This is very important study and a good thing to begin working through and discover in your own music, as once you see how to construct/deconstruct tapped ideas like these, you can begin building tapped ideas directly from chord progressions, or the reverse is also true - you could convert a tapped idea into a functioning chord progression.
Tackling musical ideas, concepts, and approaches like this is very eye-opening and inspiring, and this simple process of changing tapped phrases into chords (or vice-versa) can yield seemingly endless results. Needless to say, working through material in this manner will give you some additional insight and control when playing music as demanding as Van Halen's, or even when you're writing and creating your own music. This type of arpeggio-minded chord-based approach is useful and can really help you spice things up when you're practicing, writing, and just playing around with music.
