On 11/4/10 at 0905 hrs TFR units responded to a propane truck leaking at 5th Avenue and 26th Street. On scene fire crews found that a Heritage Propane delivery truck carrying an estimated 2400 gallons of the flammable gas was leaking product. It appears an automatic valve was stuck in the open position. There was no manual means available to shut the valve. Two nearby businesses and two houses, an estimated 30 people, were evacuated from the area. Fire crews set up large water streams on the leaking propane to disperse it.
The TFR hazardous materials team used gas meters to monitor the area and set up a safe zone.
Working with representatives from the propane company a plan was devised to get the valve to close.
The gas flow was finally shut off about 1140 hrs. No injuries were reported. The area has returned to normal. The truck was removed from the scene under its own power.
TFR responded to this situation with 5 fire engines, 2 ladder trucks, 1 rescue car, a hazardous materials team and a couple of chief officers. An estimated 34 responders were on scene from fire stations in Jackson Heights, Ybor City, Palmetto Beach, Robles Park, Downtown and West Tampa.
