Born to daily wage labourers, Joshma Kanauj knows first-hand what migration can take away from children. In Matli village of Madhya Pradesh, families migrated every year in search of work, often forcing children to drop out of school. Today, that story is changing.
By mobilising women, engaging with local governance processes and working with development partners, Joshma, a real life influencer, helped make a 1,000-capacity student hostel a reality.
Now an aspiring woman Sarpanch, Joshma represents a growing wave of grassroots women leaders who are reshaping how villages prioritise children, education and long-term development.
At Transform Rural India, we stand with changemakers like Joshma, co-designing pathways that strengthen community voice, unlock women’s leadership and build resilient rural systems.
Our work on advancing gender equity and strengthening access to social justice is what we are taking forward through our participation at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
