Baby is a blues song in the style of the 40's, before the advent of rock'n'roll. You can imagine yourself in a bar in Chicago, with the pianist singing in the background.
This is one of the first songs I ever composed on a piano and for many years I just did not know how to treat it. People were really amazed hearing it, I could not tell why it had such an impact. Very often, they would ask me again and again to sing 'Baby' while at the piano.
What would be the best to orchestrate it ? After some trials and errors, I finally decided that the best would be to keep it very simple, with a very basic bluesy orchestration : piano, bass, drums, with some brass toward the end.
When I first met Anne-Charlotte Montvile, an opera singer, this is the first song I showed her. We both were persuaded that we had here a kind of universal song, able to touch and appeal to anyone. 'Baby' has a flavor that myself I cannot really explain but it really gets into the heart of listeners.
We did a high number of potential attempts. Finally, I found that the best way was to alternate my voice and Anne-Charlotte Montville's voice and this is the way the song has finally been made.
As for the videoclip itself, here again, it took quite a lot of trials and errors before we found the adequate feeling. It first began with pictures of Anne-Charlotte filmed for the most in the dark, in a natural cave in the countryside. But finally, I found this movie by the great David W. Griffith, 'Way Down East' and it progressively appeared that it was the best visuals for this blues music. Lilian Gish is incredible in this movie of non talking times.
Way Down East by David Griffith is a movie of 1920 and a great story - only very small excerpts are used here. But the movie is really worth being seen - it is in free viewing on Internet. Lilian Gish was quite an actress.
