New England WILD Trout - Eightmile River (Connecticut Trout Tour, part VI)

Описание: Eightmile River, an exemplary wild trout stream nestled amidst busy roads and neighborhoods of Central Connecticut, is our subject for the 6th installment of the Connecticut Trout Tour. Aside from a few bridges that cross the river and offer momentary views of its cool, forest-shaded waters, you might scarcely notice this fine stream as meanders south for several miles en route to its confluence with the Quinnipiac River. Surveys by state biologists discovered that Eightmile River supported generous populations of wild brook trout and brown trout, so much so that it's entire length was designated a Class 1 Wild Trout Management Area, subject to some the strictest trout fishing regulations in the state. Clearly, it's working!

Being that I visited this stream in early September, it was running fairly low and this demanded a gentle presentation that wouldn't fluster skittish trout. I opted to toss a dry-dropper rig consisting of a prince nymph suspended below an elk hair caddis. My fly rod was a pretty standard 8.5' 5wt.

Eightmile River is truly an unlikely gem in a region of the state which is really quite densely populated.
