Denmark Rebukes Trump’s Special Envoy Appointment | Will Trump Forcefully Takeover Greenland?

The move triggered sharp reactions from Copenhagen and Nuuk, with leaders warning that national borders and sovereignty are not negotiable under international law.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the appointment and the envoy’s remarks were “completely unacceptable”, stressing that the integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark—which includes Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland—cannot be challenged. He confirmed that the US ambassador would be summoned to clarify Washington’s intentions and underline that red lines had been crossed.

The controversy comes amid renewed scrutiny of Trump’s past remarks about acquiring Greenland, including instances where he refused to rule out military force to secure US interests. Tensions had already been high after US Vice President JD Vance visited a US military base in Greenland and accused Denmark of under-investing in Arctic security.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s leadership jointly rejected any attempt at annexation, stressing that Greenland belongs to its people. The European Union also weighed in, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backing Denmark and reaffirming that while Arctic security matters, sovereignty and territorial integrity remain non-negotiable.
