The speed with which Merz’s new government and the new Bundestag have set about reforming the army, significantly increasing its funding, and introducing “voluntary conscription” is impressive. Andrzej Byrt, former Polish ambassador to Germany, explains which goals still remain to be achieved on the path towards 2035, which serves as the horizon for changes in the Bundeswehr. He also mentions the ongoing debate not only in Germany but in other European countries as well regarding the extent and manner of assistance provided to Ukrainian refugees. The coming week may bring parliamentary decisions on this matter — Ukrainians will be more strongly encouraged to take up employment.
