In Part 1 I explained what it PBM is and how a PBM processes pharmacy claims and I gave you examples of how a prescription claim is processed when using Insurance and how a claim is processed by the pharmacy when using a discount drug card. I also explained the concept of lower-of pricing and how it can cost you money if it's not used when using a discount drug card.

In this video, I will show you ways to protect your privacy when using a discount drug card as well as deceptive marketing practices drug card companies employ in order to get you to use their card instead of their competition’s cards.

I will also show you examples of how some cards measure up to the three-prong criteria I recommend when finding or using a discount drug card in order to; guarantee you do NOT pay more when using a drug card (which can happen), as well as how to protect yourself and your privacy.

Let's look at another concern a pharmacist from Broken Arrow Pharmacy Drug in Oklahoma raised when using a discount drug card. I used portions of this video in Part 1.

Although I am not aware of these practices Let’s Err on the Side of Caution and Assume this is all true.

So how do you protect yourself? Let’s take a look at How these companies might Market to you. The pharmacist said the information on the electronic claim he submitted to the PBM included: your name, your date of birth, the medication you take, your doctor, the pharmacy the claim was filled that, and (with some analysis) the disease you may have. They also receive the ID number on the card that was used.

If you filled out a form online in order to get your discount drug card the Card company may have your address, your name, your phone number, and the unique ID number they associated with the card they gave you.

It’s important to note that Some Discount Card Companies use the same ID for everyone so this is NOT an issue but most discount card companies assign a unique ID to every single card.

They can easily cross reference your unique ID number from the claim with the information you gave them and provide it to a marketing company to send you or your doctor unwanted sales offers.

BUT, If they don't have any information about you - they cannot market to you. Right?

These are examples of just some of the websites that require you to provide information about you prior to getting a discount drug card. Almost all of them, except for a few, have this ability to collect information online. Watch out for these!!

Do not fill out any forms online that ask for any personal information including your name, email address, or phone number. You may need to give your address for them to mail a card to you but - I do not recommend you providing this online by filling out any forms. Call their toll-free number to request a card instead.

If you search for a discount drug card using Google you will see all these listings for drug cards saying they can save you 80%, 75%, or more however - you need to know you do not get these savings on every prescription! Look closely – they say “UP TO” on their claims savings – NOT save 80% on every claim!

Don't be fooled into clicking on cards just because they advertise a deeper discount than their competition. All these cards have the potential to save you up to 90% off the cost your medications, Especially on generic drugs.

Find a card with a drug pricing tool either online or downloadable from a mobile app to estimate the total cost with your discount on specific medications. These savings are close estimates but remember to use a card with Lower-of pricing to guarantee you’ll get the lower of the discount price or the pharmacy’s usual and customary price – whichever is lower.

Most People do not see any value in “free”. If it's free it must not be worth anything, right? Well, in this case, that’s wrong. These cards are free and provide you with substantial savings off the pharmacy”s cash price.

You are paying the discounted price just like with any other card. You are, not the State!

Please remember:
• Discount cards are not insurance - you pay the full discounted price.
• The cards are free so never pay for them…
• And that includes never fill out a form or give any personal information online to get a card.
• Always use cards that use lower-of pricing to guarantee you always get the lowest price.
• And remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch if it looks like someone else may be paying a portion of the drug cost – don’t be fooled – They’re not!
